Since 1932, we have delivered high-quality seafood from the cold, clear waters of the Arctic. Today, we are a fully integrated aquaculture and wild-caught fish company that can offer a wide range of seafood products from the Barents Sea.

Organic salmon

In recent years, Norwegians have shown a growing interest in organic food, and organic salmon in particular has received considerable attention and a positive reputation. Br. Karlsens aquaculture division in Flakstadvåg is a pioneer in this field, and we are proud to be Norway’s first producer of organic salmon. The demand for this product is increasing, and we see it as a valuable supplement to our conventionally produced salmon.

The production of organic salmon is both challenging and costly compared to standard salmon farming. Higher costs and significantly more work in several parts of the production process are among the reasons for this.

Requirements for producing organic salmon :

  • Certification: Both the facility and the production of fry and smolt must be certified for organic operation.
  • Feed: The feed must be based on fish trimmings or fish that is not suitable for human consumption.
  • Nets: The nets in the sea must be free of copper and impregnation.
  • Net cleaning: Chemicals cannot be used for net cleaning.
  • Space requirements: The salmon must have ample space in the pens.
